Vines are really growing now, shoots are up to 7 feet high. Been busy picking off the lower sucker growth so all the energy goes up to the top. Many berries in evidence. Going to be in the 90's all week.
Just found out today that our 2011 Zin won Double Gold at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. Wow!!
I thought it might eventually match up to the 2009 bu
Well we started seeing some bud breaks last week, Friday was about 50%, but we can definitely say that Bud Break has officially happened now. H
Well Don and I just spent 2 full days racking the wine and acid balancing. The infusion spirals have been removed and we were happy to see more color in the wine. The broken spirals make great smoker chips, by the way. May have to market these. Next year we'll probably use a bigger crew so we can pump and clean at the same time. Each year we get at least one new idea to make things go better.
All the leaves have fallen, just dry canes left, gopher wars continue, and the 2011 won a Bronze in the SF Chronicle Wine Competition!!!!
Vine leaves are turning yellow. Rain has softened the ground and gophers are trying to make new burrows. It begins again.
Wow, just realized that I haven' been keeping this up. Sorry fans.
Bottom line: 1000 gallons, about 500 future cases of 2012 zin is contained with Oak in the Winery.
Just barrel tasted it Friday and it looks like we have another great wine coming. A little lighter in color since it was only on the skins for 5 days, unlike last year when it was almost 2 weeks. Alcohol is down too, 13.8%, lowest we've had and kind of surprising since the brix at he
Don, Lee and I turned 5 tons of grapes into proto-wine today with our first major pressing, and that's just half. More on Friday.
Fermentation is going rapidly, you can hear
Well, with the help of 30 active pickers and movers we harvested over 10 tons of grapes today. That's more than last year's harvest of 8.25 tons. Thinning this year was less than last year due to the quality of the fruit and more clusters were hidden by the growth which is why we're really surprised by the amount. Some of the middle sections were sparse, probably due to the heat wave in June when we weren't watering.
Don and I took vinyard samples today, long rows were at 22.8 brix and short rows at 22.2, so i looks like our Labor Day weekend harvest is on schedule. We'll pick a bin next Thursday to be sure so we won't be caught short like last year.
